At present, the semi-autogenous mills in mines are all developing in the direction of large-scale, and semi-autogenous mills with a diameter of up to 12.2m have appeared, which greatly improves the processing capacity of ore.

The main force of ore crushing in the semi-autogenous mill includes the impact force when the ore and the steel ball fall freely, the mutual grinding and peeling force between the particles and the steel balls, and the instantaneous stress of the ore changing from the pressure state to the tension state. The continuous rotation of the machine makes the large ore in the rotating inner layer (near the center of the mill), and the smaller ore particles are drilled to the outer layer for self-grinding, media grinding or mutual grinding. The biger of the diameter of the steel ball, the larger of the gravitational energy, which makes the ore block impact, grind and smash until it is crushed. Therefore, the special steel balls for semi-autogenous mills usually have a larger diameter, and the diameter of steel balls used in most semi-autogenous mills ranges from 120-150mm. According to the working principle of semi-autogenous mill crushing, the steel balls must have good impact resistance, high wear resistance, good impact resistance that will prevent the steel ball from being broken due to strong impact which greatly reduce the grinding effect of the steel ball. Higher wear resistance reduces the usage of steel balls, improves production efficiency and reduces grinding costs.
